Whale Belly
Brooklyn based folk quintet Whale Belly will release their second album I Was Once A Bird on October 8th. Founded by vocalist/guitarist Todd Bogin and drummer Nick Smeraski, Whale Belly has received substantial notable praise after having released only one album in 2011. The band has been hailed as “Sophisticated Folk Rock” by The New Yorker and has received press from USA Today, CBS News, Brooklyn Vegan and recorded a Daytrotter session last year.
The third focus track “Earthy Eyes” off of their latest effort proudly bears the imprint of traditional folk music but refuses to give in to the contrived trappings that most modern folk artists find themselves in. The song boasts a big band sound, but it’s soft and gentle. I Was Once A Bird was recorded at Saltlands Studios, where many esteemed acts have passed through, such as: Wilco, Trixie Whitley, The National and Animal Collective.
